‘Don’t be a dumbass’: Man’s obit comes with grim warning

By | August 11, 2020

Northern New York native Cody James Holland, 25, was known as a man full of heart and humor, who loved “his middle finger and showing his butt to the world!”

Despite his hilarious attributes, the Ogdensburg, NY resident’s obituary comes with a harsh dose of honesty — as well as a somber warning.

“Cody James left us on August 8, 2020, as a result of injuries sustained from being a dumbass,” it reads. “He drank, drove, and didn’t wear his seat belt! Please, don’t be a dumbass!”

That’s the only reference made to his cause of death, an apparent drinking-related crash — though that couldn’t be immediately confirmed.

Holland, whose funeral will be held Friday, is described as loving his trucks, his motorcycle, his guns and “huntin’ and fishin’,” though not in that order.

“He loved steak, chew and beer,” his list of loves goes on to say. “Again, not in that order!”

And among his musical interests, Shania Twain. ” ‘You Make Me Feel like a Woman,’ we hope she did at least once!”

He’s survived by a number of family and friends, who also remember Holland as “sometimes” attending his hometown school, where he stood out as a student and an athlete — playing soccer, basketball and baseball. And despite being asked what he’d do in the future and his response being “I’m gonna be a porn star!”, Holland attended Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondacks and became a corrections officer.

Despite his 25 short years, Holland lived life by the horns, according to the obituary, which added that his favorite saying was ” ‘You don’t tell me what to do, I do what I want!’ “
