The First Marijuana Based Drug Approved by the FDA

Many months ago we wrote about the major scientific effort to find derivatives from the marijuana plant that have health benefits and will not get you stoned. We said that there is a remarkable future for some of these compounds. Well that day has arrived sooner than expected.

 

The FDA has just approved the first prescription drug made from the marijuana plant.

 

The medication is called Epidiolex and it is used to treat two rare forms of epilepsy Its active ingredient is called cannabidinol. The FDA chief stated “this approval serves as a reminder that  sound developmental programs that properly evaluate active ingredients contained in marijuana can lead to important medical therapies.”
